Individual Counseling

Mental health counseling is unique to other psychotherapies in its focus on the mental wellness of individuals from a strength-based perspective instead of a strictly problem-based approach. When I work with individuals I am open about the process because I believe people should be informed about how counseling works to make their own choice about what they want from treatment. Individual counseling can be a valuable experience to learn more about yourself within the context of a therapeutic relationship. Counseling can be a safe place to learn to recognize and understand your feelings and thoughts. It can also help you understand your past and present, that you may move forward and take ownership of your story in the way that is authentically you.

I tend to work with individuals who are experiencing depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms specifically related to general anxiety, social anxiety, specific phobias, co-dependency, ADHD, and panic attacks. In addition, I see individuals who are struggling with relationship issues. I believe that all change in life occurs some level of grief and I work with those going through significant life transitions or events.

My theory about individual counseling or psychotherapy is that the relationship is crucial. In an open and authentic relationship, we can learn about ourselves. I integrate a number of different counseling theories together as tools based on what each individual needs. The theories I use to help inform the way I view individuals include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Solutions-Focused Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy. I also integrate concepts from positive psychology to assist in recognizing strengths and values in individuals.
